I am grateful to have lived with his music. Grateful to have been influenced by his love of women, his androgyny, and his dedication to his art. I know many people are looking forward to BET's tribute to Prince so while you wait anxiously, enjoy this crossword puzzle as a mental health break.

Aight so boom... . First year at Duke is in the b

Aight so boom...

First year at Duke is in the books. It has been a wonderful experience to be in this intellectual community amongst so many people who want to do good work. I'm inspired and encouraged and most importantly resourced to do the things I have wanted to do for a long time. Would totally do it again. 10/10 stars. Highly recommend.
.
It's been a minute, but I want to assure you that I'm still here and I'm still moisturized and I'm still drinking my water and minding my business. Those are my long term strategies for mental, emotional, and physical health. Don't be worried about what other folks doing over there. Instead I'm asking myself daily: Did you drink your water? Did you have trouble with something? Well, have you asked for help? Are you being compassionate to yourself so you can do the same for others?
.
Goals this summer: sit next to a pool at least once a week, read everything bell hooks ever wrote, meet people in Durham who are interesting and fun, and, as always, find the black lesbians.
.
Once again, my family gave money to Black Mama Bailout. But real talk, mother's day really should be a monthly, or quarterly event. Shout out to the Mothers, Muvas, and Othermothers caring for the children. We love you. If you have Mother's, Muvas, or Othermothers who care for you, love on them, if you can.
.
I celebrated my birthday a couple weeks ago. I have such amazing people in my life. You ever feel grateful just for the people who you can call up anytime and tell them anything and they will listen?
.
I'm teaching a bell hooks seminar for grad students this Fall. What are your favorite bell hooks books/essays/lectures?

Spring 🌺🌸🌷🌹doing her thing and I appreciate her. I can forgive her that sinus infection 🤧 earlier last month because today it's 80 and sunny ☀ and I got to pull out some shorts from the back of the closet.
.
In just a few short 😉 weeks I will be done with my first year at Duke... Girl, what?!?! How?! How have two semesters nearly passed so quickly? Time is a social construct ⌚.
.
I had therapy today and if my therapist could've reached through that screen and given me some dap, she would have. I've been out here taking care of myself, minding my business, and tuning into my needs and saying them out loud 🗣️ and honey, those needs are being met.
.
When you neglect parts of yourself for a long while, it may take a minute or two to get back in touch with those parts, but BABY when you do, it's like linking up with an old friend. It's like no time has passed 🫂.
.
This book ain't gone write 📝 itself so let me stop playing on my phone.

Ain't nothing like going to your barber, telling them what you want, and walking out with exactly the cut you asked for. Thank you @barbersense for the first good cut I've had all year. Still on the hunt for a good barber in Durham so if you know of any, drop the info.

The next month is going to be challenging for me. I have two talks. Two gigs. And a chapter of my book to finish.
.
I plan on putting certain things in place to make it manageable. Things like rest, relaxation, good food, good friends. Things that I've had to learn the hard way not to cut out of the busy times for the sake of "getting things done."
.
Now let me gone see about minding this business of mine. Alright now... I'll see you... Mmm hmmm... I ain't want nothing... OK... Uh huh... Yeah, tell ya momma and nem I said "hey." Alright... Bye

Some of you know this, but I am actively looking for every single black lesbian on TV since roughly 1999 so help a sister out: if you remember seeing a black lesbian character in a TV show, DM me.

Black Heritage Celebrations are upon us and in the spirit of Blackness, I'm going to say "Hell yeah" (Yes) in February. Yes to things that I've wanted to try but have been fearful of, things I've been putting off, things that seem hard. To be clear, "No" is the only reasonable response to a lot of things. But I'm talking about those things that you have a sneaking suspicion might change you, and maybe for the better.
.
As a good friend of mine once said about the ancestors, "I don't know them like that" (to which I promptly dropped to floor and rolled around for several minutes so that the ancestors wouldn't strike me down for laughing so hard). What I took away from the conversation is that maybe my ancestors want me to be different. Maybe they expect me to change.
.
From the Good Book, The Book of the Living (according to Octavia Butlter),

Here I am. Gray hair peeking out from under this beanie, feeling grown and not just because of the gray hairs or because I know every word to that Anita Baker record behind me, but because I find myself in a moment in my life where I feel limitless. I'm feeling real "who gone stop me, Boo?" and the only answer is "Nobody, except me."
.
I started my second semester teaching at Duke last week. I'm teaching two courses: Black Feminist Theory and Queer Theory. So yes, I'm teaching what I do and it's feeling good to be doing the work while teaching it as well.
.
The research phase for my next book has begun and it feels so good to be in the thick of it. In the thick of making the theory felt.
.
I'm moisturizing. I'm loving. And this year, I am diving deep into Sweetness. Making my life sweet, my tea sweet, and spending my time being sweet to the people I love.
.
Last thing, is that this time of year, the MLK Jr. holiday, is special to me for a lot of reasons. I hope you are spending the day making a dream come true for yourself.

"One thing I know two things for certain" (Megan Thee Stallion 2021) 2023 ain't bout catch me slippin' and my cup overfloweth with love so I'm certain that if I do slip and/or slide "like I'm from the 305" (Cardi B 2018), I will have help to pick my face up off the floor.
