Dear Marvel: Make Female Super Hero Movies, plural
The superhero Parthenon is overwhelmingly white and male. It is not a surprise then that the comic book movie era Hollywood is currently in repeats this trend. Kevin Feige, Marvel Studio’s president, promises us (kinda) a Captain Marvel movie by 2016. And all I have to say to that is… Thanks… And I mean that in the least enthusiastic way possible while still kind of being interested.
It’s hard to be thankful for one or two female comic book hero movies when you’ve made like 6 Spider-Man movies, 3 Avengers films, 3 of those Thor movies, all those Captain America movies, and now Guardians of the Galaxy (great by the way, but still.. lot of dudes)… You see where I’m going with this? It’s like being thrown a bone off of master’s plate that you can’t even eat for another two years. So… Thanks…
However, I will say this: Captain/Ms. Marvel is one of my favorite characters, especially since you’ve rebooted Ms. Marvel and made the title hero, Karmala Khan, a young Muslim girl. That’s hot. But let me say this about the upcoming Captain Marvel (and Black Widow, maybe) movie. You nailed it with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow. Girlfriend is doing her thing. So, I’m going to need the actress who plays Captain Marvel to have some muscle definition, be athletic, and be willing to get that pretty little face dirty. Someone who can actually kick ass and/or make it look natural; like she was literally born to do nothing but whoop ass. Find a pretty stunt woman, an unknown. Please for heaven sakes consider a woman of color. And please, hear me when I say this… I swear to god if the movie is about makeup [side-eye to D.C. Comics for making Catwoman (2004) starring Halle Berry], I’m going to vomit into a plastic tupperware, hand deliver that tupperware to the Marvel headquarters, and then pour its contents onto Kevin Feige’s desk.
Since the buzz over there at Marvel is pretty low on what other female super hero movies that could be made before the reboot of the Incredible Hulk (I have no idea if they’re rebooting that, but I’m just saying…), here are some other suggestions on female super hero movies that could be made:
- Spider-Woman (if you do Captain Marvel, you gotta have her home-girl/potential love interest Spider-Woman)
- Photon (you gotta make a movie with a sister… you’re killing me softly here leaving us out of the superhero game)
- Black Panther (you could have T’Challa as the Black Panther and then bring in Shuri to play the Black Panther too!)
- Cloak & Dagger (one is a white woman, one is a black man–it’s a twofer sandwich)
- Storm (but please consider replacing Halle Berry… no disrespect Ms. Berry… with Angela Basset)
