Hump Day Crossword: I Survived an Earthquake
Did you survive that East Coast quake like I did? While at a leadership retreat for work in the middle of the woods in Virginia, I ran for my life when the cabin we were in for lunch shook violently. The ceiling looked as if it would come down and I ran for it yelling "Get out!" as I hurdled one of my colleagues. I was the first one out the building. Everyone was okay and so was the cabin. Later, as we regrouped and laughed off our nervous angst, I said, "Well, I wouldn't have been able to pull anyone out of the rubble if I was dead." Enjoy this week's crossword.

The White Girl Mob: or Why I Really Miss Teena Marie
I will be honest, it took me several Youtube videos and a few more Google searches to realize that V-Nasty and Kreayshawn were actually serious. It took me even more time to realize that V-Nasty was serious. She truly believes that she's a rapper. If you transcribe her freestyles however more than half the "rhymes" are the b-word and the n-word in some combination. When I think about the way that I feel about the way Teena Marie performed a music form that was made by Black people, I'm just sad that Kreayshawn and V-Nasty, and their White Girl Mob are even taken a little bit seriously.

A Brief Review: Rise of the Planet of the Apes
We seem to be witnessing Hollywood's Age of the Superhero/Action Movie Remake. To be sure, they are box office hits: The Rise of the Planet of the Apes raked in $77 million this weekend. But there's something rather special about seeing a brand new movie and getting to know it's conventions. I don't doubt the awe that people felt after watching The Planet of the Apes (1968) in its original form. And while The Rise (2011) was certainly a story worth telling, the remakes of remakes are getting rather redundant, right?

Amy Winehouse: We Lost One
Amy Winehouse was found dead on Saturday in her home in Camden, North London. I fell instantly head over heels for her brassy, blues inspired voice that sang songs of pain and frustration, lust and love. What saddens me more than the loss of this talent to the world, are the reactions from media outlets and individuals who blame Winehouse for what has happened to her (even as the autopsy report is pending).

The Earth is More Powerful Than Us
A recent trip to Mexico's Teotihuacan incited a most thought provoking question: "What will we leave behind?" from one of my blog followers. If humans were to disappear off the face of the planet tomorrow, in just a few centuries, the Earth would look as if we were never here. Our plastic would be buried beneath mountains of sediment, our cities would collapse, crumble, or be washed away. And if their facades remained, almost nothing would remain that would identify us or places.

INK: Stories that Should Be Told
We have more stories to tell other than those of getting shot, getting married, getting rich or dying, or getting cheated on. We can do better and we don't even have to look that far to do it. Just go to the library.

After having conversations with a couple of the students that I worked with who had never experienced movies that I think offer fantastic viewing experiences, I wanted to share a few film titles with them because for most of them they were born around the time many of these films were released, or too young to remember them at all. They literally did not have these films available.

Chris Brown = Bobby Brown 20 years ago
As my favorite poet once said, "There are no new ideas, only new ways of making them felt," I want to take a short pause to muse over the fact that Chris Brown and Bobby Brown have had almost the same trajectory in terms of their early career. In other words, Chris Brown is the Millennial's version of Bobby Brown.

Lil’ B Ain’t Gay, but He’s Certainly Queer
Rapper Lil' B is causing a scene with his recent news that he'll be naming his upcoming studio album I'm Gay. He's not only earned some recognition from GLAAD, he's also received a few death threats, and has lost some valued support from those who once had his back in the game. What do I think it means? Good question.
